NARAL: Pro-Choice Maryland PAC
Makes Tough Decisions in Primary Endorsements
Lenett, Mizeur, Waldstreicher, Ivey and Hecht among endorsed candidates in primary races.
Silver Spring, MD, NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland Political Action Committee (PAC) announced primary endorsements in House and Senate races today, which included open seat endorsements of Senate candidate Mike Lenett in district 19 and House candidates Roger Manno, Paul Griffin, also in district 19, Jeff Waldstreicher in district 18, and Heather Mizeur in district 20. Endorsed pro-choice primary challengers include Sue Hecht in district 3A, and Jolene Ivey in district 47. Senate challengers Jim Robey in district 13 and Patricia Foerster in district 7 also received endorsements.
The primary endorsements of Lenett and others marks the first time in the organization’s history it has endorsed pro-choice candidates running against other 100% pro-choice candidates in a primary.
“It was a difficult decision, but after evaluating all of the candidates, we were convinced these people would do more than support choice—they promised to be active and outspoken leaders for a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her reproductive health,” said Executive Director Ariana Kelly. “This issue has come down to one vote in Annapolis. One vote has prevented us from passing Emergency Contraception legislation. We are talking about a law that gives women access to birth control that will prevent pregnancy. This is an issue that everyone should agree on. If we can put new leaders in office, we can pass laws that prevent unwanted pregnancies in Maryland. We must stop the extremists who believe medical decisions should be in the hands of politicians and not the women themselves.”
