NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland Celebrates 19th Annual Evening of Chocolate Gala
On October 24, 2008, NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland held its 19th Annual Evening of Chocolate Gala at VisArts at Rockville Town Center. This black-tie optional evening is Maryland's premiere pro-choice event of the year, attended by more than 350 of Maryland's leading pro-choice activists and elected officials. The event included a delicious array of chocolate desserts donated by the region's finest pro-choice chefs, a raffle, and a live auction where our guests bid on a wide range of products, services, and luxury items donated by local businesses and individuals. Keynote speaker Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-MD) addressed the need to ensure reproductive health care options for all women and the critical importance of this year's election. “The upcoming presidential election is critically important. A women's fundamental right to choose is at stake – her right to make decisions about her reproductive health unfettered by government intervention,” said Rep. Edwards. “We need a president who will undo eight years of failed anti-choice policies in this country and around the world and appoint United States Supreme Court justices who will protect a woman's constitutional rights. Barack Obama will be that president and we must ensure his success on November 4.” NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland's Choice Advocate Award was presented to Anne Gavin who recently retired from the NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland Board. Gavin has been active with the organization since 1992, when she worked on the passage of the Question 6 Ballot Initiative that ensured Maryland women access to abortion, even if Roe v. Wade were overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. . NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland uses the funds raised at this event to support our work to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding her full range of reproductive options.
