NARAL Endorses Jim Robey in D13 Senate Race

Posted: 11/02/2006

NARAL PRO-CHOICE MARYLAND ENDORSES
JIM ROBEY FOR STATE SENATE

(Silver Spring, Maryland) –Today, NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, the state’s leading advocate for personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose, announced its endorsement of Jim Robey for Maryland State Senate District 13.

“Jim Robey is the only fully pro-choice candidate,” said Ariana Kelly, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland. “We are impressed with his long record of service to the women, men and families of Howard County, and are confident he will continue to serve admirably in the state legislature.”

Robey’s opponent, Senator Sandy Schrader, voted twice against critical legislation that would have expanded access to emergency birth control and prevented unintended pregnancies. In 2006 this bill failed passage in the Maryland Senate by one vote.

“Marylanders are tired of divisive attacks on a woman’s right to choose. If elected, Jim Robey has pledged to support commonsense bills to prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion. He believes that it is time for our elected officials to unify behind better access to birth control, honest, realistic sex education and improved family-planning services. NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland will work hard to elect pro-choice candidate Jim Robey for state senate. ”

“We have had success in fighting off extremist legislation in the past years, but we still have a ways to go in ensuring women’s reproductive healthcare needs are met in Maryland,” said Kelly. The state of Maryland ranks 28th in the nation for reproductive service availability according to the Guttmacher Institute. Maryland has the nation’s 13th highest teenage pregnancy rate.
