While it's critical to promote policies that help prevent unintended pregnancies and make abortion less necessary, NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland also fights to protect the right to safe, legal abortion.
In 1973, the Supreme Court guaranteed American women the right to choose abortion in its landmark decision in Roe v. Wade. In Roe,the Court issued a compromise between the state's ability to restrict abortion and a woman's right to choose.
Since that time, the anti-choice movement has worked furiously to dismantle it - with the ultimate goal of overturning the decision altogether.
In 1991, the Maryland legislature codified the right to legal abortion by passing the Freedom of Choice Act. The following year, anti-choice forces attempted to overturn the legislation through a ballot referendum known as Question 6. Marylanders overwhelmingly supported the right to choose by a 62% margin. However, anti-choice forces remain a persistent voice in Annapolis. It is crucial that Marylanders remain vigilant of attacks on personal freedoms.
