Preliminary research shows that many Maryland pharmacists do not know the basic facts about emergency contraception (EC), also known as the "morning-after" pill or Plan B. For example, some pharmacists confuse EC with the early abortion pill (RU-486). Others think that it can only be taken immediately to be effective. Still others even say that it could cause cancer. This information is wrong. EC is a safe and effective method of birth control that contains exactly the same active ingredients as ordinary birth-control pills. It is most effective the earlier it is taken, but can prevent pregnancy up to five days after unprotected sex. NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland Fund needs help contacting pharmacists about EC.
